Hacking; celebrities are fighting back.

Following the recent hacking episodes flooding the media of recent weeks, celebrities are starting to stand up and take notice of their digital property.

“We have seen a huge surge in the number of enquiries following the recent hacking and digital security stories.” Comments Oliver Crofton, Director at Vigilante Bespoke.

“Simply by being successful or featuring in the public eye, means many individuals become targets for hacking and digital intrusion. Although for some, personal details have already been obtained through digital espionage, it is important to take action against future attacks.” comments Crofton.

A large proportion of the recent hacking episodes involve celebrities, politicians and successful sports people. In the same way as fame brings considerations about physical security, it is important to make considerations about digital security.

“A hacking episode can be incredibly distressing for the victim. Similar emotions are experienced when a property is broken into, or a car is stolen; it is one of the most severe invasions of privacy. Some of the activities reported lately demonstrate how far intruders will go, and how poorly many people protect their technology; but it has raised awareness of digital security which is something we are constantly trying to do.”

Vigilante Bespoke specialises in digital security for high profile individuals, with a client list including some of the world’s most famous and powerful people.

Crofton reports that they have been approached by a range of high profile individuals, who are concerned following the recent hacking reports, and now want to take action to ensure they are protected.

“I’m pleased to say that the celebrity world isn’t just sitting back and accepting hacking as a part of life; they are fighting back and implementing stringent levels of IT security to protect against unwanted intrusion.”

A new client and advocate of Vigilante Bespoke is Bear Grylls, survival expert.

“Vigilante Bespoke provides a complete solution to those in the public eye who want properly tested security for their digital lives; whether mobile phones, laptops, emails or document storage.” Comments Bear Grylls.

Grylls went on to say; “For me, it’s important to know that regardless of whether I’m at home or travelling around the world, I have the relevant protection should an attempted hack occur. They provide a great service from a very professional team.”

Mobile phone hacking – how did it happen?

Hacking and bugging is something Vigilante Bespoke is very familiar with. With a client list ranging from footballers and presenters, to rock stars and actors; hackers and digital intrusion is something they fight against on a daily basis.

With the recent allegations regarding celebrities and politicians having mobile phones hacked, are we at threat from being spied on?

“Our clients work within a number of different industries; ranging from celebrities, footballers, musicians, actors, to CEOs, politicians and authors. Often their technology contains very sensitive and private information.” Comments Oliver Crofton, co-Founder of Vigilante Bespoke.

“Simply by being in the public light, celebrities attract attention from the media, fans, and organizations, who want to find out more about their lives behind closed doors. The recent allegations relating to mobile phone tapping are a common occurrence within the celebrity world, and something we come up against on a regular basis.”

There are a number of ways in which a mobile phone can be bugged, the most common is voice mailbox surfing.

This is a trivial method to gain sensitive information on targets voice mailboxes by remotely accessing the voicemail and using default PIN codes for access. Although trivial to perform, when a targets phone number is known, this can be hard for a target to detect if successful. Magnified with by the recent publication of the mobile phone directory, this type of attack is only set to continue.

Crofton went on to comment; “We can all take security steps to ensure we do not put ourselves at risk of being hacked. The use of secure encrypted landlines, secure encrypted mobile phones, and utilization of Voice over IP technology such as Skype can all help.”

“In a world where we have public fascination on celebrity culture, we have found an increasing number of high-profile individuals approaching us, concerned that their privacy is at risk. The Law is no longer a deterrent for a compromised journalist; the need for the right protection is great than ever.”
